Ophthalmic Opticians (also nowadays known as optometrists) are registered with the General Optical Council as qualified to examine eyes, recognise abnormal conditions, advise on eye care and prescribe, fit and supply spectacles and other optical appliances.
Dispensing Opticians are registered with the General Optical Council as qualified to fit and supply spectacles and other optical appliances.
Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmic Medical Practitioners are doctors registered with the General Medical Council who specialise in eyes and are concerned primarily with the treatment of eye diseases and ocular surgery.
Orthoptists assist ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and treatment of squints and other weaknesses of binocular vision.
